Well hello there.
How the heck and bob are ya?
I'm doing great. Thanks for asking. 😁
I figured it would be fun to do a little plane snacks talk.
If you know me and have traveled with me, you know that I ALWAYS bring an abundant amount of food for the plane.
& I mean it. Usually a whole "personal item" full (think reusable grocery bag or backpack).
There is nothing I hate more than not having food available when you need it. Or if somebody around me needs it.
SIDE NOTE : this makes me really grateful that I have the ability to have my food needs met. Don't take that for granted, folks. Look at your next meal and think about how damn grateful you are to have it. How special that is.
Anyway. As I was saying.
I like to keep food on me.
& traveling with food can be difficult.
I've traveled with it all.
& here are my tips and tricks and favorite things to take to get through security quick.
If you were not aware, food can easily be brought through security, but there are a few tips I have when it comes to liquid like substances.
Also, I try to keep it super healthy on the plane because I know when I get to my destination all food is game.
I like priming the cells before they get mad at me. 🤗
The first thing I ALWAYS take is rice paper rolls.
& I always take a nice saucy spread for them too.
There are two ways to distribute the saucy spread so you don't get it hijacked from you at security.
First, I prep my rice paper roll (if you don't know how to do this, a recipe will come at some point. But you literally just run it under lukewarm water for 10-20 seconds).
Then I like to place it on a cutting board with the sides off two edges so I can easily grab it.
Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Next is an important step. You're going to want to use some large lettuce leafs like butter or romaine and place them on your rice paper.
Then you can spread your sauce. This keeps the sauce from making the rice paper soggy and breaking open.
The sauce in this photo was for Keith. A homemade honey mustard. I used a peanut, ginger sauce for mine.
Next you're going to add your veggies. We like to add, carrot, cucumber and peppers. Parsley and cilantro are great additions too. If you have the ability to keep these cool, I recommend adding some smoked salmon. We did not this time. But I often use a little lunchbox and toss a reusable cooler pack in and we are good to go.
Next, roll it up like a burrito.
I like to add them to my monbento boxes over top parchment paper. The monbento boxes are great because the keep from smashing your food. Check them out! Great travel buddies!
I use the parchment paper so that I can easily lift them out onto my airplane tray. They tend to stick together smashed so tightly so this allows them to be easily parted from one another.
ENJOY!
I usually make these the evening before my flight before I go to bed (& only if we are going to be on a flight over a period of time where we would need a meal). Even if we are connecting and have a chance to get something, I still make them because we never have enough time for that.
I keep them in the fridge until we leave and they will last a good amount of time before you need to consume them. If you can't get them ate within 10 hours say goodbye.
You can also add the sauce to a jar. But since it is food, it has to be 3 ounces or less. (other liquids are 4 ounces.) TSA told me years ago, I can take as much sauce as I want in separate 3 ounce jars as long as they are spread out throughout my bags. Not stacked on top of one another. Because then if you have 3, it looks like 9, they will search your bag and make you throw it out. I have done that many times, but this is my new favorite way. & it saves on a dipping mess.
I have also taken overnight oats. I recommend mixing them on they thick side. You can add some water to them on the plane if you want a looser oatmeal.
Or, you can combine all the ingredients you want for oats in a ball jar and ask the flight attendant for hot water on the plane. They are really good about doing that for you so you can mix your oats.
I have also taken salad jars, Mexican chickpea salad, steamed rice and veggies, roasted sweet potatoes, hummus and veg, load of fruit, nuts, chocolate. You name it. I've probably done it.
This is what I took on our latest trip.
Rice paper rolls for both Keith and I.
His were filled with honey mustard sauce, mine with peanut & ginger sauce.
Celery and peanut butter.
My Reeses Date Balls. Some coated in chocolate and some not (turquoise stasher bag). I also added vanilla four stigmatic protein powder to the ones not coated with chocolate.
Oranges, Pistacios, Smart Sweets, Chocolove Chocolate and a couple kind bars.
I hope this helps you in your ventures to see the world.
As always, reach out with any questions and I would me more than happy to help.
Give this post a like comment or share.
It helps me out more than you know.
Thanks for being here!
